One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow You, You’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed You most You would leave me.”
The Lord replied, “My son, My previous child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

有個人某天晚上做了個夢, 夢中他與上帝一同走在海邊, 而他生命中的畫面也一幕幕地在天際中閃過。在每一個畫面裡他都看到在沙灘上有四個腳印; 分別屬於他和上帝的。
當他生命中的最後一幕閃過時, 他回頭看這生命旅途中的每個腳印, 發現有好些時候只看到兩個腳印, 而那些時候也正好是他生命中最低潮、最難過的時刻。
這讓他內心十分不解, 於是他問上帝: "主啊, 你說當我決定跟隨你的時候, 你就會與我同行。但當我遇到困難的時候, 為什麼卻只有兩個腳印呢? 為什麼當我最需要你的時候你卻離我而去?"
上帝回答他說: "我的兒啊, 我的寶貝孩子, 我愛你而且我永遠不會離開你, 當你經歷困苦難處並只看到那唯一一組腳印的時候, 是我把你抱在懷中走過的。
